I did once try DF96 on Ilford direct positive paper, but from memory the fixer took hold before the image was developed properly, and I just got an almost blank sheet of paper. You may be able to accelerate the development and retard the fixing by increasing the temperature of the DF96 and not agitating, but I don't think it's likely to work really well, because it's designed for film and isn't as strong as a paper developer. YMMV.
